gram-positive coccobacilli
Rhodococcus equi has been associated with cases of pneumonia. It is a mucoid organism and will often produce a salmon-colored pigmentation upon longer incubation times. Immunocompromised patients with HIV/AIDS or immunosuppressed patients who have received organ transplants are at higher risk for infection. The type of pneumonia it produces resembles that of M. tuberculosis.
